The Power of Words.

Our words have power – to make our life better, to keep us stuck where we are, or to even make our life worse!

words have power to create and to destroyEvery word you say to yourself about yourself has an impact on your brain, your mind, and on your beliefs.

Telling yourself that you’re too old, too fat, too stupid, too unlovable, too poor, etc, to create the life you crave every single day, will prevent you from making the changes you want to make in your life. This type of intrapersonal communication, or self-talk, is us convincing ourselves that we are unworthy of living the life we dream of.

We can’t always stop our thoughts, or prevent negative thoughts about our self from sneaking into our minds, but our subconscious mind is paying attention to everything our conscious mind is saying, including what we are thinking and saying about our self and our life.  When we fall into a habit of talking down to ourselves, or making negative comments about ourselves or our life, we can keep ourselves stuck without really meaning to.

It’s not easy to stop ourselves from thinking certain thoughts, but we can consciously begin thinking more positive thoughts about ourselves.  We can consciously begin creating a habit of using the power of words in a more positive way, to create a more positive outcome for ourselves.

One way to begin creating a positive thought habit is to begin each day by consciously choosing to say something positive. It doesn’t have to be grand, or something long that needs to be memorized. Something simple, like “Today is going to be a amazing day for me!”  or “What wonderful things does this day have in store for me?” can be enough.

You could have post-it notes on your bathroom mirror with short affirmations, like “Hello gorgeous!” or “It’s a great day to have a great day!”

Then, throughout the day, pay attention to the micro-moments that bring you pleasure, things that went well, moments that felt good. Notice these activities, and how they make you feel.

And finally, just before you go to bed, take a moment to search your memories of the day for everything that went well for you that day. Relive a couple of the micro-moments you experienced.

Our minds have a tendency towards the negative. We’re naturally more likely to notice what went wrong than we are to notice what’s going right. We’re also more inclined, for whatever reason, to think negative thoughts about ourselves and our surroundings. And that’s okay.

You’re going to continually have negative thoughts. That’s just a part of being human. The question isn’t how to stop them. The important question is how are you going to react to those negative thoughts?

By noticing positive micro-moments, and by consciously practicing positive thoughts throughout the day, we build up a resilience that helps us move through these negative experiences and thoughts so that we don’t get caught up in them, and so that we can start moving on with our lives again.

So, tonight as you’re falling asleep, ask yourself “What went well today?” and remember some of those micro-moments you noticed throughout the day.

And tomorrow morning as you’re waking up, tell yourself that today is going to be an awesome day!
